Bus shelter improvements

Urban Network

West Northamptonshire Council is committed to enhancing public transport infrastructure across the area through a programme of bus shelter improvements. These upgrades will provide urban and rural passengers with safer, cleaner and more comfortable waiting environments, while supporting the Council’s wider ambition to encourage sustainable travel, improve accessibility, and enhance the overall passenger experience for residents and visitors.

The improvement programme includes the installation of new and replacement bus shelters at key locations, alongside ongoing maintenance, repairs and cleaning to ensure existing shelters remain in good condition. The Council is also working to modernise infrastructure where appropriate, helping to create attractive, reliable and accessible facilities for bus users and further enhancing the passenger experience.

Route 5 has been selected as the Council’s pilot corridor for bus shelter improvements and has already undergone a significant overhaul. Passengers travelling along the route will already be seeing the benefits of enhanced shelter infrastructure, providing a tangible example of the Council’s commitment to improving and enhancing the passenger experience.

The lessons learned from the Route 5 improvements will help inform future investment and infrastructure upgrades across the wider bus network.

Rural Network

Recognising the important role that bus services play in connecting rural communities to employment, education, healthcare and leisure opportunities, West Northamptonshire Council is investing in infrastructure that makes bus travel a more attractive and convenient option for residents.

The Council is working closely with parish councils, local communities and transport partners to identify priority locations and ensure that improvements deliver the greatest benefit to passengers. Through these enhancements, West Northamptonshire Council aims to create a more welcoming, accessible and reliable public transport environment for those living and travelling in rural areas, while enhancing the overall passenger experience.

Below are a few pictures of the many rural bus infrastructure locations currently undergoing enhancement and improvement works. These upgrades are helping to create safer, more comfortable and accessible waiting facilities, providing passengers with a significantly improved bus travel experience and encouraging greater use of public transport across West Northamptonshire’s rural communities.
